Myanmar – China Bilateral Cooperation

Commencement of Diplomatic Relations between Myanmar and China

  1. Myanmar-China diplomatic relations has been established since 8th June 1950 and the bilateral high level visits have promoted the existing friendship between two countries.

    2. The People's Republic of China is providing grant, loan and technical assistance for the socio - economic development of Myanmar.


Chinese Grant Assistance (from 2014 to 2019)

 3. Six Agreements on Economic and Technical Cooperation were signed from 2014 to 2019 between the Republic of the Union of Myanmar and the People’s Republic of China.

    4. According to those Agreements, RMB Yuan 4.9 billion has been provided as grants by China to Myanmar. The Grant Assistance shall be preferentially utilized to support in reconstruction after flood disaster and economic and social development projects including health and medical projects, in the fields of agriculture, education, health, rural development and proverty reduction and the livelihood improvement and assisting displaced people in northern part of Myanmar.

    5. There are 13 projects under implementation and 20 projects proposed.

Holding Economic, Trade and Technical Cooperation Joint Committee Meetings

    6. With the aim of improving the Economic and Trade Cooperation between Myanmar and China, the meetings of Joint Committee on Economic, Trade and Technical Cooperation were led by Deputy Ministers from the two countries alternately held in Myanmar and China: the first meeting was in Myanmar in 2005; the second meeting was in China in 2008; the third was in Myanmar in 2014; the fourth was in China in 2017; and the fifth meeting was in Myamar in 2019.

Assistance for Human Resource Development

7. In order to support Human Resource Development (HRD) in Myanmar, 3,329 officials attended the trainings, seminars and workshops arranged by Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM), China from 2012 to 2019.

Signing Agreements, Implementation Agreements, MoUs and Exchange Letters

8. During the State Visit of President Mr. Xi Jinping to Myanmar on 17 and 18 January, 2020, total of 33 legal documents including 6 Agreements, 3 Implementation Agreements, 14 MoUs and 10 Exchange Letters were signed to cooperate in the areas of trade, infrastructure, border economic cooperation, production, human resource development and electricity.

Pledged to provide Yuan 4 billion

9. During the bilateral talks between State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and President Mr. Xi Jinping held at the Presidential Palace on 18 January, 2020, the Chinese government pledged to provide Yuan 4 billion in three years as development assistance to Myanmar in order to utilize in the fields of livelihood improvement and infrastructure development.
