Deputy Minister for Investment and Foreign Economic Relations and Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) Governor for Myanmar          Dr. Wah Wah Maung joined the 2nd ERIA Extraordinary Governing Board Meeting and Meeting between ERIA, Ambassadors of ERIA Member States and Dialogue Partners at the Ministry of Investment and Foreign Economic Relations, Nay Pyi Taw via video conference.

The 2nd ERIA Extraordinary Governing Board Meeting was attended by ERIA governors from ASEAN Member States, Australia, China, India, Japan, Korea and New Zealand, and ERIA academic advisory council members, ASEAN Secretary General and senior officials also joined the meeting. The meeting was chaired by Professor Dr. Cielito F. Habito from Ateneo de Manila University of Philippine.

At the opening session, Chairperson of the ERIA Governing Board, Secretary-General of ASEAN and Special Advisor to the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) of Japan gave the remarks. Then, the chair introduced the New Governors from Brunei Darussalam, India, Malaysia and Myanmar.

After that, Chief Operating Officer of ERIA Mr Koji Hachiyama, Chief Economist  Prof Fukunari Kimura and Senior Policy Fellow for Energy and Environment  Prof Jun Arima , presented the ERIA contribution for the 17th East Asia Summit and the G 20 Indonesia, major outcomes of ERIA research activities and major outcomes of ERIA research of energy and environment. The Meeting exchanged view on these matters and provided the guidance.

In the afternoon, the Meeting between ERIA, Ambassadors of ERIA Member States and Dialogue Partners was held and the ERIA governors, Ambassadors from ASEAN and ASEAN Dialogue Partners, ASEAN Secretary General, ERIA academic advisory council members and senior officials participated at the meeting.

At the Meeting, President of ERIA and Secretary General of ASEAN gave the remarks. Then, Senior Economic Advisor Dr Aladdin D Rillo and Chief Operation Officer Mr Koji Hachiyama presented the ERIA activities. After that, ERIA governors and Ambassadors exchanged view on the future direction of ERIA and gave the guidance on ERIA’s 2023 activities.

At the meetings, Deputy Minister appreciated ERIA for providing the various research activities related with COVID-19 and capacity building programme for the region. Then, she requested ERIA to provide the financial and technical assistance, and capacity building programme for environment, circular economy and trade related with environment sectors in Least Developed Countries (LDCs). Furthermore, she also highlighted that Myanmar will fully support the ERIA’s initiatives of the capacity building program and research activities and encouraged ERIA to continue the ERIA’s research initiatives and capacity building programme for Myanmar.  

Officials from Foreign Economic Relations Department also attended the meetings.
